New documents and perspectives
According to her CV Tula Giannini spent two months in france last summer preparing a new book called "The Flute in France, 1625-1860, New Documents and Perspectives" to be published by Scarecrow Press sometime this year. I'm looking forward to reading that when it comes out!

A deux fleustes esgales
My four month wait for a new hotteterre flute by Jean-Jacques Melzer should soon be over and I only hope that one day I may be able to play it half as well as Jean Pierre Pinet and Valérie Balssa do on this wonderful double cd of french baroque flute duets. Highly recommended.

The Early Flute
Rachel Brown has a new book out called "The Early Flute". Available from the publishers, Cambridge University Press who also offer a sample chapter to read and from Ardal Powell (US)
Publishers blurb : "This practical guide for flautists provides a survey of the instrument - its development, its technique, its repertoire and its literature - between 1700 and 1900. Each issue is set in a musical context and technical and stylistic matters such as fingering, tone production, articulation, ornamentation, vibrato, expression and delivery are examined in depth, applying evidence from historical sources to the standard flute repertoire. A series of case studies offers detailed interpretations of music by Hotteterre, Handel, Bach, Gluck, Mozart and Boehm. As an internationally recognised soloist, orchestral player and teacher of modern and historical flutes, Rachel Brown brings a wealth of experience to amateurs and professionals alike, encouraging stylistic awareness through an understanding of the way in which composers and flautists approached instruments of the past. Copious music examples, illustrations, fingering charts and bibliographies make this a standard reference book for both 'period' and modern flautists"

Recording Labels
Detailed list of period instrument/authentic performance recording labels. The same site also has a list of Period performance ensembles and early music vocal ensembles. Abeille musique also presents an interesting list of recording labels.

Lovely portrait by François de Troyes believed to be of Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre. I couldn't find out where it comes from but while looking found this portrait also by him of the lutenist Charles Mouton.

After a meeting of La Messinoise last night I've been asked to find out what I can about summer early music festivals in europe. I'll post the results once i've done that but on a quick look I shall be starting here, here and here.

Historically Inspired Popup Windows
It's a pity it's hosted by tripod which means you have to fight your way past all the stupid pop up advertising windows but Newolde.com "Promoting Historically-Inspired Performances of Early Music and Baroque Opera" is well worth the trouble.

Voyage Musical dans l'Europe des Lumières.
Flammarion vient de réediter "Voyage Musical dans l'Europe des Lumières" qui est une traduction de "The Present State of Music in France and Italy" and "The Present State of Music in Germany, the Netherlands and the United Provinces" by Charles Burney. Ceci est une excellente nouvelle vu que cette traduction est épuisée depuis longtemps et semblait introuvable.
