Theoretician, Composer, Instrument maker
Mary Oleskiewicz argues persuasively in her thesis that Quantz's interest as a theoretician is matched by his skill as a composer and instrument maker, that he anticipated many later developments and that his own flutes were idealy suited to the repertoire played in Dresden and Potsdam. Her recording of the sonatas is played on close copies of original instruments especialy commisioned from Jean François Beaudin.

Benedek Csalog has just released a recording of Quantz sonatas on Hungarotron again on a Quantz flute this time built by Philippe Allain-Dupré who has also issued a recording of sonatas by Kirnberger using the same instrument.
