Airs Spirituels, Benigne de Bacilly
I've now published a facsimile of the
Airs Spirituels by Bacilly. This 1688 edition revises and enlarges the earlier editions of these songs
which are, to the best of my knowledge, unavailable in any modern edition facsimile or otherwise.
The work also contains a long and interesting preface
in which Bacilly explains the virtues of setting appropriate religious texts to original music rather than the,
in his view, regretable practice of taking well known melodies and simply grafting more 'suitable'
texts onto them.
