Le Regne d'Astrée

Rather suprisingly it seems that no modern scholarly edition of l'Astrée by Honoré d'Urfé exists, a situation that is happily being addressed by a team from the Sorbonne who are publishing it on a site called Le Regne d'Astrée. Their version is based on a full, and downloadable, scan of it available at the BNF.

Nouveau recueil de chansons choisies, Jean Neaulme.

This varied and interesting eight volume collection of songs published by Jean Neaulme went through several editions in the early eighteenth century. It has been scanned as part of the Google books site although as they seem to have pushed it through a fax machine rendering the music if not the text nearly illegible I'm unsure how much use it is. Attempts to send the result through OCR software in order to recover the texts also produced the usual dismal results.

Tendresses Bacchiques

Following on from my facsimile of Ballard's Brunetes I have now published a facsimile version of the Tendresses Bacchiques This is a volume of songs published in 1712 that Ballard describes as being both "tendres et à boire" and which he considered as a supplement to the volumes of Brunetes and Parodies.

Couperin et les Airs Sérieux

Normaly published anonymously the Airs Serieux were nonetheless often penned by the best composers. An interesting article by Greer Garden on Couperin's contribution to this popular repertoire.

London Pro Musica

Long absent from the net London Pro Musica now has a site with information on their editions and catalogues. As they say "London Pro Musica Edition has one of the largest collections of early music in practical editions in the world."

L'art du chant en France au XVIIe siècle

Despite it's age Théodore Gerold's history of french vocal music is still one of the references on the subject. Long out of print although available in a minkoff facsimile it is now available online.

La Clef des Chansonniers

This is one of the primary sources for popular french music of the XVI and early XVII centuries. A digital facsimile of volume two is available here.

Airs Spirituels, Benigne de Bacilly

I've now published a facsimile of the Airs Spirituels by Bacilly. This 1688 edition revises and enlarges the earlier editions of these songs which are, to the best of my knowledge, unavailable in any modern edition facsimile or otherwise. The work also contains a long and interesting preface in which Bacilly explains the virtues of setting appropriate religious texts to original music rather than the, in his view, regretable practice of taking well known melodies and simply grafting more 'suitable' texts onto them.

Ballard's Brunetes

Some time ago I published an online facsimile of the 1711 volume 3 of Ballard's Brunetes ou petits airs tendres at http://www.cowderoy.net/brunetes/index.html
As promised I have now added volumes 1 & 2 published in 1703 and 1704. The original facsimiles of volume 3 were not of very good quality. The new version offers higher definition photographs including for the previousely published volume 3 which has been entirely rephotographed. The site address remains the same at http://www.cowderoy.net/brunetes/index.html I have also now included some short notes on the works, a bibliography and details on copyright none of which was present previousely. Coming soon! The 1688 edition of the "Airs Spirituels" by Bacilly.

IMSLP the public domain music score library.

The IMSLP / Petrucci Music Library public domain music score library is active again. A quick look turned up facsimiles of the Quantz duets, the Boismortier opus 3 duets and the Sammartini sonatas amongst much else.
